Methodology

How it works

We compute four components separately:

  • Federal income tax using IRS 2024 progressive brackets and the standard deduction for your filing status.
  • Social Security at 6.2% on the first $168,600 of wages.
  • Medicare at 1.45% of all wages, plus an additional 0.9% over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married joint).
  • State income tax using each state's published 2024 brackets or flat rate. Nine states have no income tax.

All calculation runs in your browser. No values are sent to our servers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this tax advice?
No. This is a simplified educational tool. It does not consider itemized deductions, credits, retirement contributions, local taxes, or many edge cases. For a precise figure, consult the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator or a licensed tax professional.
Why does my actual paycheck look different?
Real paychecks include 401(k), HSA, health insurance premiums, pre-tax transit, and various withholdings configured on your W-4. Those reduce taxable income before federal and state taxes are computed.
Why is the calculation per year, not per paycheck?
Annual basis avoids paycheck-frequency artifacts. We then divide by 12 (monthly) and 26 (biweekly) to show period equivalents.
Are local taxes included?
No. Cities like New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Detroit add a local income tax that this calculator does not model.
