Dental Hygienists salary in Hawaii

Hawaii's median wage for Dental Hygienists was $96,770 in 2024, about 2.8% above the national median of $94,162. The gap is real but narrow. This is one of the smaller state premiums we see for this occupation across the country.

The wage spread here is tighter than most states. The 10th percentile sat at $81,790 and the 90th at $101,560, a difference of roughly $19,800. For comparison, many states with similar median wages show a gap twice that size between their lowest and highest earners. In Hawaii, experience and seniority move the needle less than they do elsewhere. Most working hygienists in the state cluster within a fairly compressed range.

Cost of living matters here. Hawaii's price index is 113.2, meaning everyday expenses run about 13% higher than the national baseline. After adjusting for that, the nominal premium over the national median shrinks below zero. A hygienist earning the state median in Honolulu effectively takes home less in purchasing terms than a peer earning the national median in a mid-cost state like Ohio or Indiana. That does not make Hawaii a bad market for this occupation, but it does mean the headline number overstates the real-world advantage.

BLS projects employment for Dental Hygienists to grow 7% between 2024 and 2034, faster than average. Hawaii has 1,060 hygienists in the dataset, a small workforce by any measure, so even modest growth in patient volume or retirement turnover could open up positions.
